A Lesson Remembered


The expression goes, “lesson learned” (actually so many different variations). If you read my last post, “Raw And Unfiltered,” I am titling this post, “A Lesson Remembered.” The lesson that I remembered was learned long ago, and having two college age daughters, it is a lesson that I have been trying to ingrain in their thought processes, their confidences, their lives, often. I have to modify that “dad talk” a little bit, with just a disclaimer, that sometimes we forget that sage advice.

So what happened two days ago, ended up being the beginning of a very, very bad day. The opposite of King Meidas where everything he touched turned to gold, it appeared my day was turning into one giant pile of poop emoji, getting bigger as the day went by. To be fair, each issue that came up, was bad news, with the potential for one situation turning catastrophic. Everything piled together was like a dormant volcano building up so much pressure inside its dome, bound to erupt as the lava needs to go somewhere, I felt like a volcano. And to no surprise, I did erupt.

Taking a slight step back, when I have my discussions with my daughters, a.k.a life lessons, being in college, pressure is something that they often face, whether it be an exam, project, or group event, and not everything works out perfectly or as expected. We talk about the things we have control over, and the need to let go of what we cannot control. I also tell them about the need to change their thought process and the way to do that is to change the oxygen going to their brain by temporary altering their breathing, staggered, a trick I learned in therapy a long time ago. Closing my eyes, or focusing on a particular object, breathing in through the nose slowly for a count of four, then with lips pressed, breath out through the mouth slowly for a count of five. I repeat this three or four times, more if necessary, until I get my thoughts to slow down. Once that happens, I can think clearly again, and deal with the subject at hand.

But Wednesday was different. Only having time to look back now, I got that phone call on an empty stomach. I was definitely not expecting that phone call, and definitely did not expect that news. I was completely taken by surprise. Under normal circumstances, I would have handled things much differently than what I wrote last post. I know that as fact. Before I could enact my breathing exercises however, INCOMING!!!!!, I got hit with some more bad news, totally unrelated, and totally unexpected. Having not resolved my earlier problem, now I had a second one to deal with simulaneously, all the while, not changing my thought processes. This was not going well, as my reactions and responses were getting worse, and somewhat aggressive.

And then a third call came, and with the feels of a “sucker punch,” the caller in a calm voice, and kind of confident, like “no big deal,” hit me with an issue that had the potential to turn my life upside down. That was it. The dome had cracked, the volcano was ready to blow. My reactions to that caller, who was just a “messenger” doing their job, were angry, unprofessional, and for his sake, undeserved as he did not create the situation, others in his chain had done so. But I was going to make it clear, that a terminating ending was not an option, and nor were any of the solutions he was reading to me, likely from a prepared manual. Again, I normally think of myself as a calm and rational thinker, but unable to get to that status from the first call that came that day, I was in a position I did not recognize, nor did it feel good. Remember that, “it did not feel good.”

Several hours after that final phone call, my thoughts had stopped spinning like a tornado in my head. I was once again able to think and process, and knocked out one of the issues, actually the second in occurance right away. Then I took on the original issue that started it all, and within a half an hour, speaking with someone else, an advocate of mine, that issue got taken care of. Finally, the biggest problem of all was all that was left, but only that to deal with. I began to put together a strategy to fix what this particular company had done to me, and was unwilling to make right on their end. At the end of the day, neither of us stood tall and victorious, they did not get their way, and I was not given any relief, but using the control that was put back into my hands, and my managed thoughts, I came up with a different solution, not perfect, but will put things back in balance.

Phew!

Wednesday took a physical toll on me, one that I had not felt in a long time, and honestly, that long time was not a good time either, in fact, it almost killed me. Just like in 2008 with my heart blockage, I had put my body, and my heart, under so much stress two days ago because of my reaction. But wait, it wasn’t my fault, those behind the phone calls caused the stress. Sure, but I know that I do a much better job of controlling my reactions, which is something I constantly counsel my daughters when they come to me, feeling pressures at school.

Adulting my daughters is a whole different stage of parenting than Barbies and school stuff. The pressure, a good pressure, to make sure that I teach them as much as I can how to handle life, how to handle situations that get thrown at them as adults like I had to deal with, continuing to build their confidence, and a whole lot of personal management skills such as: communication, controlling emotions (duh), problem solving, time management (which proudly they do very well), understanding money and decision making. And then there is the personal stuff: self-respect, empathy, self-care, and so much more.

Honestly, these are all things that I wish had been taught to me, but weren’t. So I was and still am winging it. But from the results they are experiencing, while I can take credit for giving them that direction, their results are all their own.

I had Chinese takeout for dinner on Wednesday, and this was my fortune inside my cookie. Too bad I didn’t have it on Tuesday, the heads up would have been appreciated, and much less stressful. When it comes to my daughters, I do try to lead by example, if I am going to talk the talk, I walk the walk. And I have shared this mistep with them, as well as how it made me feel physically afterward, and importantly, not to allow myself to respond that way again. I can get the things done I need, or maybe sometimes I cannot. But the physical stress on the body and mind is a game-ender. I just needed that reminder.

Happy Father’s Day


I consider Father’s Day to be the most important day to me, bigger than all of the others. To me, there is no more important responsibility or title that I can have in my life, than being a “Dad.” And I have been blessed twice. It is not something that I take for granted. A father/child relationship is best described as an hourglass, with sand running through much too quickly, until the sand has all run out. The path to fatherhood begins differently for everyone but there is not greater feeling than when a child is placed in your arms for the first time.

And while the first half of my daughters lives were pretty much “Norman Rockwell paintings” doing normal things that families do from school activities to extracurricular, my divorce put a stronger emphasis on Father’s Day for me, making sure that this one day, above all other days including Christmas and birthdays, was my day to celebrate with my daughters.

There has been no greater honor than to be one of my daughters two main role models. As adults now, there are no more crayons, reading books, or watching Barbie videos. Now the real pressure of fatherhood is on, to make sure they know about insurances, major expenses, career decisions, time management, and of course relationships. I always thought that I would be the one to have the trouble with this progression, and to a degree I do, but it was my younger daughter who had a “Cat’s In The Cradle” moment, when she expressed her fears that, now in college, and in her future, she would not see me as often, which is likely. But just as I got by during my divorce, not being with them every day, technology via Facetime and Skype, I could see them and talk to them any time I wanted or needed to.

Those who know me, know that my daughters are my world. With all of the health issues that I deal with in my survivorship, my daughters are my driving force, to keep fighting. They both have friends who have lost their fathers for one reason or another, and I do not want them to ever have to feel that pain. And while I know that I am mortal and have no control over fate, my love and strength for my daughters is what gets me through every day.

But as much as I celebrate today, I and many others also recognize loss, fathers not able to see their children, or worse, children not able or even willing to see their fathers. As an adult child of divorce, I have experienced this pain. And it is my hope that some day, just as in my case, amends can be made and bring the fathers and their children back together.

I miss my father. It has been ten years now that he has been gone. He got to watch his granddaughters grow in their early years, but how do I wish he could see who they have become. I wish I could tell him, that I had his strength when it came to always fight for my rights as the father of my daughters. I never gave up.

To those who are able to celebrate this day, Happy Father’s Day. And for those who have just memories, may those memories provide you comfort on this day.

Debunking Three Myths


Up until a couple of years ago, there was a popular game that teens played among each other, as my daughters often challenged me to the game. It was an interesting concept, though I disagree with the one premise, the game did provide something valuable, an opportunity to learn about an each other. It was called “two truths and a lie.” This game is considered an “ice breaker” or conversation starter, and found not only in schools, but also in media such as Parade Magazine, even the Ellen DeGeneres show. You simply state three things, but two of those must be the truth, and the third must be a lie.

As a parent, I thought I had a pretty good edge with my daughters in this game, clearly knowing more about them than they themselves. It turns out that they were pretty good at finding things to tell me that I might be unaware of, one of the favorite topics, food choices. My youngest daughter was real good at getting me on that one.

So with that explanation, these are two of my truths, and one of the myths (I prefer to use myth as opposed to a lie because this is not something I say or believe, but rather what others believe.

  1. I love to attract drama.
  2. I am a shy person.
  3. I am a private person.

Now if you have followed “Paul’s Heart” long enough, it might actually be difficult to tell. But the fact is, two of these things are actually true about me, while the third, is more of a manifestation or a means for someone to justify how they feel about me as a person.

This first one really baffles me.

I have been told by a few people, that I “love to attract drama.” While I have had my share of intense events in my life, I certainly have never gone looking for them. When I ask for examples of the drama they refer to, I hear crickets chirp. I guess they must be comparing their lives to mine as far as things going on. They must be fortunate not to have anything nipping at their heels constantly. And for that, they feel I must go looking for trouble. I don’t.

I will admit however, that I have an unusually calm demeanor in dealing with crisis after crisis. But do I go looking for drama? Absolutely not. This is just one misconception that some people have expressed to me. I can say for certain, that when I face a crisis, I have a defense mechanism that kicks in, removing all emotions, allowing me to think rationally, recognizing that any kind of escalation in my emotions would likely make the situation worse. And so, I do not make it worse. I simply give myself time to think things out clearly and with direction. Ironically, I am a horrible chess player, but in life, I am able to think several steps ahead. But I definitely do not need to add anything more to my schedule demanding more attention of me.

I really do consider myself a shy person. Merriam-Webster defines “shy” as “timid, tendency to avoid, hesitant, or reserved.” Though I express myself through writing, speaking, and other performances, it is the individual one-on-one conversations that I can struggle with.

Through my school days, I kept to myself, often intimidated by the friendships that others had amongst themselves. Constantly moving during my school days did not help me to establish new friendships, only to move again as soon as I would finally get comfortable. As a co-worker, after some time and effort, I found myself being able to interact with moderate comfort. But really? Anywhere that I had a boundary, physical or mental, between me and someone else, is when I felt my most confident and functional. That became obvious as a radio disc jockey in my younger days, in a closed soundproofed room, broadcasting on the radio, no one looking directly at me. Recently, I had a former classmate call me out on social media following a post response which I considered quite neutral and factual, them stating aggressively and actually quite meanly, that I was still the same as I was in high school, still a “&(%*%” (fill in with any derogatory remark). Before I blocked any further access to me from them, I did make sure that those on that particular page were aware, that while I recognized the name, I never knew this person. I literally basically “hung” with maybe a handful of close friends in school. This person and I had never crossed paths because I was so shy.

But my biggest challenge came when I decided to run for a public office, our local school board. I did not prepare myself mentally, that campaigning was more than just saying “I’m running for school board.” I knew that I would have to give speeches, which I was okay with, because there would be separation between me and the audience. My problem came, when my campaign wanted me to attend “meet and greets” (candidates get the chance to mingle among the voters individually), and I was petrified. As a slate of five candidates, running for the five open slots against the five incumbents, I felt invincible. I had others behind me able to bail me out of any situation that I was getting boxed into. Not being a “politician”, I was not prepared for stumbling blocks that could be thrown at me. While I am a big “eye contact” person when I talk to someone, I found this to be a big problem when the eye contact was not returned.

After all of the speeches I have given, articles and stories that I have written, and other performances, I know that I can handle myself in public situations, but I still consider myself a shy person. This is a major challenge for someone trying to promote a book.

I am actually a very private person. I can hear the “I call bullshit” on this one from many. But I really am a private person, or at least, I want to be. And up until my diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I definitely can affirm that I was a private person. There is one thing that prevents me from that privacy that I make the choice to live by. 

When I finished my treatments, I promised myself that I wanted to give back for the gift of life that I had been given. But as many cancer survivors know, because of treatments, I do not have the option of some of the more popular things I could do, such as give blood or donate organs. I wanted to help. I wanted to inspire. I want to give hope. To do this, that means I have to “share” my experiences, and if you have followed “Paul’s Heart” long enough, I am really quite transparent, some times to my own detriment. This advocacy that flows through my blood, would branch out to other issues such as patient care, cancer survivorship, adoption, public education, and of course, divorce related issues in regard to children. If I were not in the position I am in today, I would definitely prefer to going back to being a private person.

I am going to throw in a bonus truth. In spite of all of the difficult things that I have faced in my life, and continue to deal with, I really am a positive person. Sure, my cancer history, my divorces, and several other things that I have faced, are quite the downers. But I persevere. I come through every time, because I believe I will. All too often, many have counted me out, actually, they depended on me tapping out and quitting. But I don’t. Yes, I have many health issues that consume my attention. Of course, I missed being with my daughters during the divorce period as much as I was prior to the divorce. There are many things that I deal with as an advocate, and yes, they are difficult. But that does not make me a negative person because I make a choice, to deal with everything head on and to support others. I truly believe that things work out the way that they are intended to work out. And as long as I wake up tomorrow to do it all again, that sounds pretty positive to me.
